Talk Title: “The flagellar length control system”
Talk Abstract: A fundamental question in cell biology is how cells control the size of their organelles. We are investigating this general question using the flagella of the green alga Chlamydomonas as a model system, chosen because it reduced the size control question to a single dimension – length. Based on quantitative imaging, we have formulated a simple model for length regulation that can account for all existing experimental data, but which only works because it appears to involve some form of length sensor. We are now investigating possible length sensing mechanisms using a combination of modeling and experimental methods.
