Talk Title: “Lipid Immunogens from the Gut Microbiota”

Abstract: Numerous studies show robust correlations between the composition of the human gut microbiome and the states of human hosts. Some bacterial taxa/metabolites are associated with disease, others with health, but there are few descriptions of the molecular mechanisms underlying these outcomes. This talk will address homeostatic immunity and two bacteria that are associated with it: Akkermansia muciniphila and Muribaculum intestinale (or S24-7). One of these strains, S. muciniphila, is highlighted in numerous studies, the other is rarely mentioned. They were both identified as significant outliers in a large-scale screen to identify inducers of adaptive immune responses during homeostasis. Bioassay-guided fractionation has identified two relatively simple lipids, one from each, that appear to be the relevant immune modulators. Their structures, biosyntheses, synthesis, and mechanism of action will be presented.
